Robert Metzger Discusses AI’s Emerging Role in State Procurement in NASPO Presentation
Shareholder Robert Metzger presented on the opportunities and challenges around artificial intelligence (AI) for state governments and their procurement efforts to the National Association of State Procurement Officials (NASPO) on March 26.
During his presentation, “Artificial Intelligence & Legal Implications for Public Procurement,” Metzger discussed how he expects AI will impact state procurement and identified key challenges for state officials. He advised attendees that although they should monitor federal AI initiatives, they must develop their own policies, set core values, and modify their risk management and contractor selection criteria to account for AI variables and risks. He also explored how AI could usher in a new, data-driven “due diligence” process that extends beyond contract awards. Metzger encouraged state officials to embrace AI-informed cyber supply chain security tools. He also stressed the importance of continuous monitoring obligations and updated contractual terms when moving initiatives forward.
