Jon-Erik Magnus to Speak at ACI’s EPR Think Tank – West Coast

Rogers Joseph O’Donnell shareholder Jon-Erik W. Magnus will serve as a panelist at the American Conference Institute’s EPR Think Tank – West Coast, taking place October 5–6 at the Marines’ Memorial Club & Hotel in San Francisco. The conference brings together regulators, producer responsibility organizations and industry counsel to examine packaging Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) laws as they move from legislation into implementation across multiple states.

Extended Producer Responsibility is a regulatory framework that shifts responsibility for a product’s end-of-life impact from consumers and municipalities onto the “producers” who manufacture, brand or sell it. For packaging specifically, a growing number of states, including California, Oregon, Washington, Colorado, Maryland and Maine, now require producers to register with a state-approved producer responsibility organization (PRO), report packaging data and fund recycling and source-reduction programs.

Magnus will co-panel a session titled “Building a Multi-State Compliance Strategy for Packaging EPR: Lessons from Colorado and Beyond,” alongside Vanessa Fiene, REHS, Producer Responsibility Compliance Specialist at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. The session will review key differences among existing state EPR programs, explore opportunities to harmonize reporting requirements and producer obligations across states and discuss how producers can build compliance programs scalable enough to adapt as EPR policy continues to evolve.

Magnus represents and counsels a great variety of businesses – from Fortune 100 to small “mom and pop” organizations, in all aspects of environmental and regulatory compliance in California and Washington. His work includes extended producer responsibility/packaging and labeling, storm water, air district and hazardous waste compliance. Magnus also litigates compliance and cost recovery matters.
